When girls get involved in love, there’s trouble
Kyary: I haven’t fought with Secchan much at all.
Secchan: When we were in the second grade we had fights where we’d pull each other’s hair and we’d both cry, but since then we haven’t fought at all. We used to get annoyed with each other sometimes though. The guy who used to be my boyfriend in our third year was an incredible flirt, and he’d say stuff like, “Kyary’s cute.” After that, he gave me the silent treatment and I found out that he’d lent Kyary [a copy of] ‘ONE PIECE’. Even if that wasn’t [what really happened], there was a nasty mood between us and we were both super annoyed with each other.
Kyary: When we graduated from junior high, she very coldly said to me, “Good luck when you get into high school. I don’t get your personality, but um, see you.” She broke my heart with that painful goodbye. But when we had the chance to get some of our classmates from junior high together, I heard a rumor that Secchan had already broken up with that guy, so I thought that things would be alright again. And when we talked to each other as usual, it [ended up that] everything was fine [between us].
Secchan: Rather than calling it a ‘fight’, I’d say that back then I’d one-sidedly gotten sick of both my boyfriend and Kyary. I was unpleasant and avoided all the other girls he’d made passes at. He was the one who was bad, but since I liked him at the time…. I’d been hoping to repair my relationship with Kyary, but I was awkward and embarrassed because I was the one who’d been ignoring her, so I was grateful when I got a call from Kyary. What a memory of puberty that is.
Kyary: Back when we weren’t talking, I didn’t know how you were doing at the time. When girls are in love it can turn into trouble, so I make sure not to interfere. Just from talking to my friends’ boyfriends or the guys that my friends like, they’ll say to me, “Did you know that I like XXX?” and things like that… When it comes to boys, I only talk to weird, funny ones.
――What are friends to you, Kyary?
Kyary: I think that friends who really are there for each other are true friends. Absolutely, no matter what. The moment you think that that’s unreasonable, we aren’t friends. Those things just don’t go together. People seem to think that I make friends with all sorts of people because of my appearance, but that’s just because that’s what makes me meet them. If there’s no one who will really be there for me, I get tired and can’t keep at it for long. It was so boring when I had no friends in class, but if there was no one I got along with there, I’d rather have been alone. Even now when I have photo shoots with other models, instead of forcing myself to try to get along with them I’ll listen to music by myself or something. When it comes to friends, I think about whether or not we’ll really get along with each other, but I won’t reject someone if they come to me just because of that. I think it’s nice to be with everyone without having to be especially close.
