According to Warner Music Japan, the plagiarism issues regarding Yume no Hajima-Ring Ring have been resolved.
When Yume no Hajima-Ring Ring was released earlier this year, many Japanese listeners remarked that the first verse sounded remarkably similar to the song Sayonara by GAO, which was released on April 2, 1992. Nakagawa Yusuke or “ARMY” (the president of Kyary’s management company ASOBISYSTEM) as well as WMJ released official statements at that time denying that Yume no Hajima-Ring Ring was an homage, cover or otherwise plagiarized from Sayonara.
Nakata Yasutaka also revealed on the TV show “SMAP x SMAP” in November 2013 that he sometimes hums the melodies he’s writing into a smartphone app that recognizes melodies to make sure he is not accidentally writing something he’s heard before. It is speculated that he either hummed the part in question into the app but wasn’t able to find any similar melodies, or that he simply didn’t realize the similarities between Yume no Hajima-Ring Ring and Sayonara.
In a statement on their official website, WMJ states that after speaking with the rights holders and those affiliated with GAO’s song, both sides were able to settle on the issue and determined that the similarities between the two songs were unintentional.
