Oh! My God!! Harajuku Girl / Interview: Kyary & Her Mom (Part 2)

We spent her high school days hitting each other image

―― Kyary has said that you sparked her interest in fashion once she’d gotten into high school.

Mom: When she was little, I used to dress her up in all sorts of cute outfits, like jumper skirts over blouses. In elementary school and junior high she still wore normal clothes, but in her first year of high school she started reading fashion magazines and before long she got completely out of hand.

 A girl who loved exercise

―― What was Kyary like when she was little?

Mom: She used to be so small - and I wanted her to be healthy and strong, mentally and physically, besides - so before she started pre-school we used to go to the nearby park together with some onigiri and I’d make her play there. So ever since she was little I’ve raised her to be relatively healthy, and without any cavities. But I since I just wanted to raise her to be healthy I didn’t have any expectations for her in terms of how well she did at school.

Oh! My God!! Harajuku Girl / Chapter 4, Part 4: “Things I Like”

I [don’t mind going to] yakiniku and karaoke by myself

I love getting wachawacha crazy with my friends, but I also enjoy being by myself quite a bit.

When I have time between photo shoots I go to karaoke places and cat cafes by myself. I’m totally fine with getting yakiniku or ramen by myself too.

Speaking of which, here’s something that happened to me when I was in high school. Even though it was hard because I was super sleepy, I struggled out of bed and went to school while being pelted by rain. But when I [got to school], there wasn’t a single senior there!

I want to go to a bean sprout buffet!

Q. If today were the end of the world, what would you do?
A. I’d go to a bean sprout buffet!

Q. What side dish do you [always] want in your lunch box?
A. I pick bean sprouts, yaaaay!

Q. If you had to eat one thing every day for a whole month, what would you pick?
Say it with me: Bean! Sprouts!

That’s how much I love bean sprouts. My mom used to put stir-fried bean sprouts and meat in my lunch boxes, and since they’re so delicious I came to like bean sprouts a lot. Aren’t they yummy? Man, I just want to eat a big heaping plate of bean sprouts right now~!

Comedy always leaves me gasping for breath

I’m crazy about comedy. Ever since I was in elementary school, I’ve been a kid who loves to watch comedy shows.

I’ve always always loved Mr. Ezaki [Takafumi] from Yuttari Kan! And Mr. Yoshimura [Takashi] of Heisei Nobushikobushi! Oh, and Mr. Tomizawa [Takeshi] of Sandwichman and Mr. Kawahara [Katsumi] from Tenjikunezumi are SO hilarious! Morisanchuu’s awesome too! I’ve also supported Hanya since before they got as famous as they are now. And when I was in high school we made a ‘comedy research club’ and went to Lumine the Yoshimoto to watch live performances. I went so much that I ended up being buddies with solo comedian Mr. Hatanaka Shinjirou!

Oh! My God!! Harajuku Girl / Interview: Bon-chan x Kyary (Part 4)

We [dressed] super plain in school

―― Did you cry at graduation?

Bon-chan: I didn’t cry. I normally don’t cry very much. Sometimes I laugh so hard I cry, though.

Kyary: Bon-chan has a clean and easily-hurt heart, so I used to change the way I said things in case it hurt her feelings. I never saw her cry at school, but I know she’s the type to cry when she feels sad. I’m different; I don’t feel much of anything, and even when I do, I don’t show it. I just feel it in my heart.

I was so shocked that Kyary had a boyfriend

Bon-chan: When Kyary got a boyfriend, I thought, “So she can love? She really is human.” Up until then, I didn’t think she was. (laughs) When I asked her, she told me she’d never fallen in love herself, you know.

Kyary: Yeah yeah, a lot of times they confess to me, and then I fall in love. I’ve never had anything like a… an unrequited love, so I haven’t really had many talks about love with Bon-chan.

Bon-chan: Yup, we haven’t really talked about love much, have we. You weren’t all cutesy and hyper about it either. You aren’t like a normal high school girl.

Oh! My God!! Harajuku Girl / Interview: Bon-chan x Kyary (Part 2)

The peak of our fun was our second year of high school

Kyary: At first I didn’t buy fashion magazines, and even when I did I used to buy stuff like ‘non-no’. At the time I got into high school, I wore really quiet-looking clothes like ‘PAGEBOY’ and stuff. But after my chance fashion snap from when I was walking around with Bon-chan was put in ‘KERA’, the two of us decided to do something fun and show up with a unified look in our fashion too. For example, I’d be like, “Today I’m gonna dress up really boyishly, so Bon-chan is gonna dress really girly.” During our first and second years of high school, we used to be really loud and flashy.

 A fated encounter

Kyary: We met when we got into high school. My first impression of Bon-chan was that she was incredibly calm and collected. She used to be so aloof. Even if you talked to her about something she was really short and blunt with you, so at first I thought she was scary. After that, we were in the same class from our first year of high school all the way through to our third.

I buy wigs on Yahoo! Auctions

I’d love to have fun with all different kinds of fashion. And to match my fashion, I’d like to change the color and style of my hair! The magical items that make those wishes come true are wigs.

When I was in high school, the school rules were really strict and we weren’t allowed to dye our hair, so I often used to use wigs after school and days I had off. It’s so easy: just by changing your hair color you can totally change the impression you give, and when all is said and done, just wearing it makes you look good!
